ABSTRACT. The 1716 Domingo Ramon expedition resulted in the temporary occupation of East Texas from 1716 to 1719 with six missions and a presidio. This expedition represented Spain's commitment to the permanent occupation of the Province of the Tejas Indians. In addition to the original diary kept by Ramon, there are two extant copies of this diary and one translation (Foik 1999). Although Foik (1999:129) doesn't specify which manuscript he uses as his source, this essay shows that his translation is based on the least reliable copy. Inconsistencies between Foik's translation and the original diary are numerous and include (a) misnaming or omitting expedition party members, (b) misstating the number of expedition party members, (c) providing erroneous geographic locations of the expedition party during its journey, (d) changing the meaning of words and phrases, and (e) simple mistranslation. These inconsistencies are reconciled employing a philological approach. Areas for continued research are also suggested.* INTRODUCTION. I have determined that Foik's translation is based on the least reliable copy of the original diary. This fact has resulted in inconsistencies in the historical literature pertaining to the expedition. Before analyzing these inconsistencies and their impact on scholars, I will briefly discuss the historical background of the expedition and the extant manuscript sources of Domingo Ramon's diary. Implications for future research will follow the analysis.
